Alan Mackie: Head of Evaluations

Alan joined the group in 2008. Over the past 15 years he has worked on a number of crime and social policy research and evaluation projects for central and local government, including the Home Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Office of Criminal Justice Reform, the Youth Justice Board and the Department of Communities and Local Government. He has published on many areas of the of the criminal justice system, including youth justice, sentencing and offender management.

Jack Cattell: Principal Researcher

Jack has over eight years of research and evaluation experience, both as a commissioner of policy relevant research and as a researcher delivering to public sector organizations. Jack rejoined Matrix in July 2008 after two years within the Social Research and Evaluation division at the Department for Transport. He has managed and designed research projects of high strategic importance in transport, education, criminal justice, health and European policy, and his role at Matrix is to provide expert research and evaluation methods advice to clients.

David Morton: Analyst

In October 2007 David was recruited by Matrix as a consultant before joining the operational research team as an analyst in January 2008. David brings a host of technical skills to Matrix and has experience in the use and application of Access, Excel and VBA as well as other specialist analytical software packages including SPSS and SAS. David’s primary focus has been the development of analytical methods, tools and models.
David graduated in 2006 and holds a MChem in Computer-Aided Chemistry from the University of Surrey.

Lucy Bunting: Researcher

Lucy is a Research Assistant within the evaluations team of Matrix Evidence. Prior to joining Matrix, Lucy gained experience within numerous criminal justice agencies, including conducting qualitative and quantitative questionnaires with victims of crime, on behalf of a policing agency. Lucy has a BA degree in Criminology from the University of Leicester, where she gained a wealth of knowledge and interest in both qualitative and quantitative research methods and an array of criminological areas, including; youth justice, penal reform, and substance misuse and social exclusion.

Alison Martin: Chief Operating Officer


Alison joined Matrix Evidence in February 2010 as Chief Operating Officer. Her academic qualifications include a BSc (Honours) in Experimental Immunology and Oncology in 1984 and MBChB in 1987, both awarded by the University of Manchester, and an MSc in Primary Care in 1999 from Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London. Her main interests are in developing and using a pragmatic approach to systematic reviews and REAs so that rigorous evidence syntheses are delivered to clients within tight deadlines and restricted budgets.

Maria Rizzo: Senior Research Manager

Maria joined Matrix Evidence in November 2010 as Senior Research Manager. Her academic qualifications include a BSc (Honours) in Psychology with Clinical Psychology at the University of Kent, and an MSc in Forensic Mental Health Science from the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. Maria has held research posts at the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health, producing NICE clinical guidelines and with the Department for Education, evaluating the quality of parenting programmes at the National Academy for Parenting Research. Her main interests are to use practical and robust scientific methods to synthesis information to help inform policy development.

Victoria Clift-Matthews: Editorial Project Manager

Victoria joined Matrix in January 2011 as Editorial Project Manager. She has considerable editorial experience particularly in health publishing across a variety of products, in addition to experience as a clinical practitioner. In her most recent role, Victoria was an associate publisher for a healthcare publishing company where she managed a range of peer-reviewed journals aimed at different health practitioners, including midwives, palliative nurses, school nurses and healthcare assistants. She has a BA in English and a Diploma in Midwifery Practice from King’s College London. Her special interests are public health and midwifery and she was editor of the British Journal of Midwifery for four years. Victoria also launched a new journal for African nurses and midwives to increase knowledge dissemination across African countries and help reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Louise Lombard: Researcher

Louise joined Matrix in July 2011 as a researcher. She has experience in conducting quantitative research and systematic reviews as well as clinical dietetics. Louise comes from Stellenbosch University in South Africa where she completed her Masters degree in Nutrition, worked as a researcher for a systematic review on risk factors for cardiovascular disease in Africa, and was a part time lecturer in nutrition. She assisted in the development of the questionnaire and budget for the protocol of the upcoming Partnership for Cohort research and Training (PaCT), a component of the Global Epidemiology Initiative established at the Harvard School of Public Health. She also consulted on menu analysis and adaptation of all public hospital menus for special diets in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Oluwaseye Abogunrin: Researcher

Oluwaseye joined Matrix in August 2011 as a researcher. He has experience conducting systematic reviews as part of his academic career, and clinical experience as a doctor with several years of experience working as a medical officer in Nigeria. His academic qualifications include an MSc in Health Policy, Planning and Financing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the London School Economics and Political Science, and a Masters in Public Health and medical degree (MB BS), both from the University of Lagos.

Obinna Onwude: Researcher

Obinna joined Matrix in November 2011. His academic qualifications include a BDS from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and an MSc in Dental Public Health from Queen Mary, University of London. He has experience as a clinical dentist, and as a systematic reviewer having worked with the Cochrane Oral Health Group on their topical fluoride reviews. His main interests lie in study methodology, especially risk of bias in trials.

Dr. Kevin Marsh: Chief Economist

Kevin’s research interests include the economic evaluation of public policy, in particular health and criminal justice interventions. He completed his PhD in Economics at the University of Bath, specialising in monetary techniques for valuing environmental resources. Kevin joined Matrix in 2003 following a year at the Social Disadvantage Research Centre, Oxford University. Kevin is an active member of the Campbell and Cochrane Economic Methods Group, and contributes to methodological development in the field of economic evaluation.

Prof Paul Dolan: Chief Scientist

Paul Dolan is a Professor in the Department of Social Policy at the LSE. He has previously held academic posts at York, Newcastle, Sheffield and Imperial, and has been a visiting scholar at Princeton. Paul is recognized as one of the world’s leading health economists, and he received the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Economics in 2002. He has over 80 peer-reviewed journal publications in leading economics, health, and social science journals and has secured research grants from a range of funding bodies. He is currently on a part time secondment at the Cabinet Office as an expert advisor to the Behavioural Sciences Team.

Dr. Leeza Osipenko: Principal Economist

Leeza’s work focuses on health technology assessment (HTA) and health economics. At Matrix Leeza focuses on managing and delivering health economics analysis, with particular emphasis on health technology assessment, at the highest level, in the UK and across Europe. Prior to joining Matrix, Leeza worked at the University of Warwick (Medical School) as Senior Research Fellow. Leeza has a BA (first) in Economics from Denison University (USA), MSc in Information Systems Management from Syracuse University (USA) and a PhD in Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, USA).

Evelina Bertranou: Senior Economist

Evelina is a Senior Economist at Matrix. Her work focuses on the economic evaluation of public policies and interventions. Evelina holds a BSc in Economics and an MA in Economics from Argentina, and she recently completed an MSc in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics.

Meena Venkatachalam: Economist

Meena joined the economics team after completing her Masters at The London School of Economics and Political Science in International Health Policy – Health Economics (LSE). Prior to LSE she worked within the Finance industry in New York, USA. She worked full-time at Bank of America and successfully completed internships at Deutsche Bank and Merrill Lynch.
