Our multi-disciplinary team boasts a mix of professional skills in economics and social research, commercial experience and political science and is able to conduct business in 21 European languages. Dr. Usman Khan: Managing Director

Usman is a public policy specialist, with twenty years' experience including more than fifteen years working internationally. A founder shareholder and member of Matrix’s Board, Usman is Managing Director of Matrix Insight, the European Public Policy Consultancy of the Matrix Knowledge Group. Core roles include strategic leadership, project direction, thought leadership, client relationship management, corporate development, business development and team leadership. Usman’s has directed projects for clients including the DG Sanco, DG Just, DG Home, DG Enterprise as well as the European Parliament. In the UK clients have included The Prime Ministers Strategy Unit, the Department of Health, the Home Office as well as numerous local statutory and not for profit agencies.

Usman was additionally a Non-executive Chair of Camden & Islington Community NHS Trust from 1998 to 2002, Chair of the London NHS Race Equality Group from 2000 to 2002 Usman was appointed a trustee at Turning Point one of the UK’s largest not for profit providers of social care in 2003 and was its Chair between 2005 and 2007.

Usman holds a PhD Decentralisation and Democratisation of Public Services and a BA Modern Studies.

Dr. Gabriele Birnberg: Principal Consultant

Gabriele is a Principal Consultant with overall responsibility for leading and growing the company’s business at European level. She previously managed the company’s Justice and Home Affairs practice and has successfully led a large number of studies, including impact assessments, evaluations, and comparative best practice studies in the area of judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters, fundamental rights and union citizens, gender equality, as well as asylum and migration.

Gabriele holds a PhD in European politics from the London School of Economics, prior to which she studied economics and political science in Washington, DC.

Pawel Janowski: Senior Consultant

Pawel is a Senior Consultant at Matrix Insight and is responsible for management and delivery of research and consultancy projects involving a variety of stakeholders across Europe. Pawel’s expertise relates in particular to impact assessments and other projects involving cross-country quantitative data collection and analysis, in particular in the area of employment and social affairs. He has been involved in a number of studies for the European Commission (DG EMPL, DG JUST, DG REGIO, DG MARKT, DG ENTR, DG ADMIN, DG RTD), the European Parliament, UK Public Sector, and the Third Sector.

Pawel has completed an MSc degree in European Political Economy at the European Institute of the London School of Economics and also holds a joint honours bachelor’s degree in Economics and Sociology form McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Mirja Gutheil: Senior Consultant

Mirja Gutheil is a Senior Consultant at Matrix Insight. She works primarily on justice and home affairs projects at European level, including evaluation (ex-ante, interim, ex-post) and impact assessment studies. Mirja’s expertise relates in particular to developing and implementing qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including sampling methods and mapping exercises, the design and implementation of online surveys, large-scale survey analysis and case studies. Mirja has also managed and delivered numerous evaluation projects across different European Commission services, including DG Justice, DG SANCO, DG Employment, DG RELEX and DG Research.

Mirja holds a Master of Science from University College London in European Public Policy and a Master from the University of Bonn in Medieval and Modern History, Political Science and International Law.

Giulia Peterlongo: Senior Consultant

Giulia is a Senior Consultant at Matrix Insight. She manages the company’s Health practice and overviews the management and delivery of a large number of studies in the area of public health, health workforce, cross-border care and pharmaceuticals. Giulia’s expertise relates in particular to impact assessments, feasibility studies and evaluations involving cross-country quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. Giulia has also successfully managed and delivered a number of impact assessment and studies across different European Commission services, including DG SANCO, DG JUST, DG EMPL, DG REGIO, EAHC, EP.

Giulia has completed with Merit the MSc European Political Economy at the European Institute of the London School of Economics. She also holds an honours bachelor’s degree in International Economics and Management from Bocconi University in Milan.

Dr. Kamleh Khatib: Consultant

Kamleh is a Consultant at Matrix Insight and is responsible for management and delivery of projects in the areas of health, justice and home affairs. She has worked on several assignments across a number of European Directorate Generals including DG HOME, DG JUST, DG ENTR, as well as a number of European Agencies including ECDC and EAHC. In the field of Justice and Home Affairs, Kamleh carried out the quantitative aspects of impact assessments, cost modelling and evaluations in the areas of reintegration policy, forced returns monitoring and the standing of victims.

Prior to starting with Matrix she held several positions in Brussels, Rome and Turin. She has undertaken work for the UK National Audit Office, the European Policy Centre, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the German Marshall Fund of the United States of America, the Anna Lindh Foundation, and Paralleli Euro-Mediterranean Institute.

Kamleh completed her PhD in Political Science from the London School of Economics (LSE) focusing on comparative electoral systems. She previously obtained an MRes in Research Methods and Public Policy (LSE), an MA in Political Economy (Essex University) as well as a BA in Politics and Economics (Yarmouk University).

Mariana Dates: Consultant

Mariana, a consultant at Matrix Insight, provides consultancy and research support to public sector clients, especially in the areas of health and social care. Since joining the company in 2008, Mariana has undertaken research, analyst and project management roles in programme reviews and evaluations of interventions, impact assessments, performance benchmarking, service redesign and rapid evidence assessments.

Mariana has also worked in a public policy consultancy firm in Spain and in the media sector in Argentina, both as a TV producer and as a journalist in the country’s main financial newspaper. She has also worked as the newspaper correspondent in France for two years.

Mariana joined Matrix after graduating with distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where she studied an MSc in Social and Public Communication. She was the recipient of the Institute of Social Psychology’s Hilde Himmelweit Award for the 2006/7 academic session. Mariana also holds a degree in International Studies from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2006 she validated this degree in Spain, at the Universidad de Granada.

Hana Gajdosova: Junior Consultant

Hana is assisting with qualitative and quantitative research on Impact Assessment Studies for the European Commission. Hana’s role at Matrix involves assisting with the specification and delivery of research and consulting projects. She has been involved in the Impact Assessment Study on Gender Pay Gap and conducted a series of interviews with relevant stakeholders across many EU Member States. She holds an MSc in European Social Policy from the London School of Economics where she attended courses on gender theory and European welfare states. Her dissertation focuses on gender-friendly policies in Slovakia and Czech Republic. Prior to joining Matrix, Hana’s role as market analyst in a French marketing group consisted in conducting a comparative qualitative analysis of various CEE countries. She also worked as a think tank research assistant where she specialized in defence and security policies of the European Union.

Hana is currently enrolled in a Master programme in European Social Policy at London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE). She holds a Bachelor degree in Social Sciences from Université Paris Descartes La Sorbonne where she was involved in quantitative and qualitative research oriented projects.

Chris Thomas: Intern

Chris joined Matrix Insight in September 2011. His intern role consists of assisting with qualitative and quantitative research for the European Commission and other institutions.

Chris recently completed a Master’s degree in Economic Policy at University College London and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of Bristol. His interests lie in analysing policies and the interaction between economics and politics. He previously conducted quantitative research assessing fiscal policy within EMU and evaluated UK welfare-to-work tax credit reform policies. He also worked for a member of parliament and as an economic research assistant at the University of Bristol, looking at the political economy of UK local government.

Jakob Pedersen: Intern

Jakob joined Matrix Insight in September 2011. His intern role consists of assisting with research for the European Commission and other institutions.

Jakob is responsible for the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in the fields of labour market, health and justice. He holds a Masters degree from the College of Europe with a major in Law and Economics of the Single Market. He has specialized in quantitative research methods and comparative labour market policy. His dissertation research focused on how stakeholder preferences are shaped in relation to complex welfare reforms. He has previously worked in the survey department of Ramboll Management, where he performed interviews and evaluated survey questionnaires.

Stephan Kreutzer: Intern

Stephan is assisting with qualitative and quantitative research on European projects. Stephan’s role at Matrix involves assisting with the specification and delivery of research and consulting projects. Prior to joining Matrix, Stephan studied International Political Economy at the London School of Economics where he wrote his dissertation on the EU-South Korea Free Trade Agreement comparing it to the US-South Korea Free Trade Agreement. He gained both quantitative and qualitative research experience when working at the Centre for International Political Economy, and at the Jean Monnet Chair of Excellence for European Integration in Berlin where he co-wrote a research proposal assessing regime stability in the Mediterranean region. He has international experience from various policy-related internships in New York and Istanbul and interned at the German Parliament.

He holds an MSc in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics and a BA in Political Science and Media and Communications from the Free University of Berlin.
